  Frequently Asked Questions

Below, a list of the most commonly asked questions the Kansas Dental Association receives from both patients and members.  If you do not see your question below, please send us a question using our online form or give us a call at 785-272-7360.  The KDA staff will work diligently to answer your question as promptly as possible.  The questions are organized by topic.

Patients
Complaint  I would like to file a complaint against my dentist?  The Kansas Dental Association has a program titled peer review where it mediates disputes between dentists and patients.  It does, however, not handle complaints where a patient is alleging a violation of the dental practice act.  Submit an online application.

Education  Does the KDA have materials for teachers or other educators about dental health?  The KDA has a library of resources (brochures, videos, etc.) which can be checked out and purchased.  That list is available by clicking here.

Insurance  Does a particular dentist accept my dental insurance?  The Kansas Dental Association does not keep this information.  You will need to contact your insurance carrier or the dentist directly.

Records I want copies of my records.  Is my dentist required to provide them to me?  Yes, a dentist is required by law to provide those records to you, but may charge a fee for the reproduction of those.  The current fee, as determined by the Kansas Department of Labor is $16.29 labor, $.54 per page for the first 250 pages and $.38 each additional for those things which can be reproduced on a copy machine and a reasonable charge for those things which cannot be reproduced such as x-rays.  See KSA 65-4971(b)

Referral  I am looking for a dentist.  Can you help me?  The Kansas Dental Association only maintains a list of dentists in Topeka who are accepting new patients.  We do not have a referral service for patients.  You can search for a dentist in your area by using the member search on the American Dental Association's website.

I am looking for a dentist that treats the low income.  The Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved has a listing of all the KAMU member clinics listed by county

Senior Access  I heard that the Kansas Dental Association has a senior access program?  The Kansas Dental Association discontinued this program in the late 1990's and no longer has a program specifically target at seniors.  The Donated Dental Services program might be able to help you.

Classified Ad  I want to place a classified advertisement.  The KDA website does have a section for free classified ad placement.  We require that the ad recruit dental providers into the state of Kansas, not out.  Those ads which recruit out of the state of Kansas are not eligible for the free service.

Dues  I have questions about my dues.  The KDA website has information about the dues process.

Fluoride  I am looking for the latest information and guidance for fluoride treatments, recommendations for infants, or other studies about water fluoridation.  The American Dental Association has tremendous resources available and the latest research available on its website.
     Insurance
I (or patient)am having trouble collecting a claim from an insurance carrier for a procedure completed.  Who should I contact to file a complaint and/or get some help?  Sometimes the KDA has contacts with an insurance carrier higher than the provider representatives that can be of assistance to our members, but HIPAA makes it difficult for the KDA to intervene directly on behalf of our members and their patients.  If you have exhausted your contacts with the insurance carrier,  you may want call the Department of Insurance at 800.432.2484  and open a complaint on the insurance carrier.  They will then make contact with the insurance carrier and open a file on in an effort to resolve the issue

KDA Enews  I don't receive the KDA Enews, how do I subscribe?  If you are a KDA member, you are eligible to receive the KDA Enews.

NPI Number  Do I need to obtain an NPI Number and if so, how do I register for one?  The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique, government-issued, standard identification number for individual health care providers and provider organizations like clinics, hospitals, schools and group practices. The government has contracted with an external company for processing applications and developing these random 10-digit numbers for applicants. Applications to obtain an NPI began on May 23, 2005. (More from the ADA).  An NPI Number can be obtained through the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) Web site.

Am I required to give my patient a copy of their records?  Yes, a dentist is required by law to provide those records to you, but may charge a fee for the reproduction of those.  The current fee, as determined by the Kansas Department of Labor is $16.29 labor, $.54 per page for the first 250 pages and $.38 each additional for those things which can be reproduced on a copy machine and a reasonable charge for those things which cannot be reproduced such as x-rays.  See KSA 65-4971(b)
