Children’s Dental Health

Each February, the Kansas Dental Association supports Children’s Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.

Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

The Kansas Dental Association’s goal is to partner with schools and educators to teach children the importance of dental health. We encourage you to rely on the KDA as a meaningful resource to create maximum impact in the teaching of children’s dental health. February is when the greatest resources are available. It is also when dentists, hygienists, assistants, newspapers, television and radio stations can all reinforce your current curriculum objectives.

In preparation for each school year, the Kansas Dental Association would like to encourage all schools to set aside time in your February curriculum to remind students about the preventive measures they can take to fight tooth decay.

All elementary school nurses will receive a packet in January to assist teachers in reminding elementary students that proper oral hygiene such as daily brushing and flossing, regular dental visits, eating a nutritious diet low in sugar, and the avoidance of ALL tobacco products is the key to strong and healthy teeth.

The packet will include a 3rd grade drawing/coloring contest entry sheet and rules featuring, the “Tough Tooth Team” campaign. By learning the facts about “Keeping Your Smile Healthy” and then putting the students artistic skills to work, students could win a new bicycle! Posters, coloring sheets, game sheets, and a list of supplies available from the KDA (also available below) will also be included.

We need your participation to help stimulate public awareness of the significance of good oral health and prevention of dental disease in our nation’s youth. Contact your school nurse in January for your Children’s Dental Health Month packet.
