membership About Dues

This webpage answers some of the most-asked questions about KDA, ADA and local society dues.  As you will see, there are many different dues categories as well as options for payment.  If you have other questions, please feel free to call the KDA membership staff at (800)432-3583.
Do I have to pay dues for the ADA, KDA and my local component separately?

No.  In order to make things easier for you the KDA invoice includes dues for
ADA, KDA and your local dental society.  The KDA then forwards the money to the ADA and the local component.

When are dues due?

Dues are due and payable by January 1 of each calendar year.  A grace period is extended until March 15.

Can I pay with a credit card?

Yes.  The KDA will be happy to accept a credit card payment through VISA or MasterCard.  Simply record your card number and expiration date on the appropriate lines on your dues statement and mail it in.

What are my payment options?

Several options are available:

  • Lump Sum Program.  Once you receive your dues statement, you can send in the total amount with a check or credit card.  Enclose the bottom portion of the dues statement form with your payment.

  • 2)Prepaid Dues Program - The KDA Prepaid Dues Program can reduce the financial burden of one lump-sum payment.  This program gives you the option of paying your yearly dues in 5 monthly payments.  To be eligible, dues for the current year must have been paid by June 1.  Information is mailed out for sign-up in May, and return for sign-up is due in the KDA Office by June 15.  Payments begin July 1, and continue for 5 months through November 1.  (more)

  • ADA Member Advantage CitiCard - A MasterCard credit card plan endorsed by KDA and ADA.

  • Dues waivers - There are dues waivers available if you are physically or financially disabled.
Are my dues tax-deductible?

Dues payments are deductible by members as an ordinary and necessary business expense.  As part of the deficit reduction legislation of 1993, the tax law was changed to prohibit taxpayers from deducting expenses attributable to lobbying, as defined in the law.  Accordingly, only that portion of your dues not attributable to lobbying activities remains deductible.  We provide you with a reasonable estimate of the non-deductible percent of your dues attributable to lobbying activities on your dues statement.
I'm a recent graduate.  Do I pay full dues?

The ADA and KDA recognize that recent graduates need some time to get settled in the profession.  Therefore, both the ADA and KDA offer several years of reduced dues with continuous membership.  You owe no dues for the year you graduate.  The dues for your first full calendar year after you graduate are 0% of the ADAs and KDAs full dues, plus applicable component dues.  The second full year you pay 25%; the third year you pay 50%; the fourth year, 75%; full dues, the fifth year.

My dues statement lists other assessments.  What do they mean and what must I pay for?

In order to keep you informed about where your money goes and to abide by various laws the KDA breaks down your dues statement by individual listings.  They are:

ADA Dues.  This is your American Dental Association dues.  Remember, membership is a tripartite.  That means you belong to the American Dental Association, the Kansas Dental Association and your local dental society

KDA Dues.  This is your KDA dues.

District Dental Society.  This is your local dental society dues.

PAC.  This optional payment is used to fund the ADAs and KDAs Political Action Committees, which help support the respective legislative programs.

ALLIANCE.  This optional payment is for your spouses membership in the Alliance of the ADA as a National Member-at-Large. The Alliance supports dentistry through educational programs, scholarships and lobbying activities.

KDCF. This optional payment is used to fund the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation whose mission is to provide funding and resources to improve oral health in Kansas, through scholarships, grants and the Kansas Mission of Mercy.

I'm retired.  Do I still pay full dues?

No.  To be eligible for retired status, at a 75% dues discount, you must be fully retired and not earning any
income from your knowledge of dentistry.

To obtain retired status at the KDA you must submit an
affidavit attesting to retirement through your local dental
society.

I work only part-time.  Do I qualify for a discount?

No.  The
ADA and KDA do not have a reduced membership rate for those members not working a full schedule.

I've been a member for quite some time.  Do I qualify for
life membership?  If yes, what would my dues be?

On the KDA and local levels, life membership is awarded in
the spring of each year to dentists who are turning age 65 during that year and who have maintained membership in the American Dental Association for thirty (30) consecutive years or forty (40) total years. You may include consecutive years of active membership in other ADA constituent associations.  You must be an active member in good standing of the Kansas Dental Association at the time of nomination and election and continue to earn an income from dentistry. Dues will be reduced to reflect life member status the year you turn 66.

 There are two categories of
ADA and KDA life membership: active (working) and retired. Active Life members pay 50 percent of ADA and KDA dues for as long as they work. Retired Life members do not pay dues. Retired Life members are to earn no income from their knowledge of dentistry.

Is there a way to recoup some of my dues?

Certainly. Many members have recouped the cost of dues by taking advantage of the benefits listed below.

Through the KDA Council on Dental Care Programs, members can receive copies of dental insurance contracts that have been reviewed by the ADA Contract Analysis Program.

The KDA also serves as a clearing-house for the concerns of members in dealing with third party programs.  The KDA staff stands ready to intervene on your behalf with third parties.   Whether the issue is timeliness of payment, claims denials, discrimination on the basis of degree of provider, or other matters, the KDA assistance is just a letter or phone call away.

Membership in the KDA provides access to quality, competitively-priced medical programs and disability insurance and many other endorsed products and services.

Through the
ADA members have access to universal life and term life, office overhead, hospital income, professional liability and office contents insurance, and membership retirement programs.
