The
Greater Topeka's "20 Under 40" is designed to promote mentorship and
professional development by introducing these leaders to the established
business community and by promoting them as role models for the younger Topeka
generations.
Dr.
Julie Swift, a periodontist from Topeka, KS, was recognized as a member of the
inaugural class, created to recognize twenty people under the age of forty who
are leaders in the Topeka community.
“It's nice to be a part of new set of future leaders that have already
demonstrated a commitment to their jobs, families and the community,” Swift
said.
“I look forward to learning
valuable skills and sharing past experiences with this talented group of
individuals in order to keep improving the surrounding community so that it will
continue to be a place we are proud to call home.”
Candidates for the class were initially nominated and then completed an
application form which included past leadership and community involvement, goals
and aspirations, and specific questions on leadership.
A selection committee then selected the final class.
“I admire people who are not only responsible and self-motivated but who also
respect and value the skills and abilities of those around them,” Swift wrote in
her application. “Effective communication skills are also a must.
Leaders have to be willing and confident enough to take on a leadership
role, but I want a leader who not only can come up with ideas, but also follows
through, motivates others, and brings their ideas to fruition.”
Along with operating a
periodontal practice, Swift has completed seventy-two
quilts since 1995 and participates in a three day, sixty mile walk in support of
Komen for the Cure.
“I am thrilled to be part of such a great group of people from throughout the
community,” Swift said.
Originally from Wichita, Dr. Swift earned her undergraduate degree from Wichita
State University and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of
Missouri-Kansas City. After a three-year residency, she earned her master’s
degree and Certificate in Periodontics from Baylor College of Dentistry in
Dallas. Dr. Swift has supervised students in the Baylor and UM-KC periodontics
clinics and has practiced in Topeka since 2004.
Dr. Swift is past president of both the Topeka District Dental Society and the
Missouri-Kansas Periodontal Association. Also, in 2007 she co-chaired the Kansas
Mission of Mercy dental project held at the Kansas Expocentre. |
