This past Friday, women dentists from the First and Fifth District Dental Societies met at the Overland Park Mariott’s Greatroom Bar for an evening with HighHeels & Handpieces.

All women dentists (KDA members and non-members) practicing in the Kansas City area, Lawrence, and several smaller surrounding counties were invited to attend.

Dr. Jill Jenkins and Dr. Melodee Armfield enjoyed socializing with other women in the profession of dentistry on Friday evening.

Dr. Melodee Armfield (KDA Executive Committee Secretary), Dr. Jill Jenkins (of Jenkins and LeBlanc Pediatric Dentistry), and Jennifer Jones (KDA Finance and Membership Coordinator) organized the soiree, which was also sponsored by Delta Dental of Kansas.

The Greatroom Bar had drinks and hors d’oeuvres available, and provided a relaxed atmosphere for the social gathering.

In addition to sponsoring both the Overland Park and Wichita H3 events, Junetta Everett (Vice President of Professional Relations for Delta Dental of Kansas) held a gift raffle, giving those in attendance the chance to win a complimentary bottle of wine.

This proved to be a very pleasant surprise to two lucky winners, both of whom are busy mothers as well as dentists.

With more women entering the profession of dentistry (over 47% of dental school students nationwide) the KDA recognizes the need to appeal to women.

One goal of HighHeels & Handpieces is to encourage more women dentists to be involved in organized dentistry, thus increasing the number of women members within the association. Increasing KDA membership in the Kansas City area would also be ideal, as it is currently at about 66%.

“We are very enthused to include the ever growing number of women dentists to the Kansas Dental Association,” said Dr. Melodee Armfield, the KDA Executive Committee Secretary. “High Heels & Handpieces will be a great opportunity for women dentists to network with their peers.”

Look for upcoming opportunities to share your ideas on how the KDA can meet the needs of women dentists. H3 is planning to hold several more events in the next several months, particularly in the Topeka and Manhattan areas. More information about these events will be released as soon as possible, as they are still in the works.

H3 is also preparing for a women-in-dentistry spa event in accordance with the upcoming KDA Summer Get Away in Colorado Springs from June 5-7. The retreat will be held at a local Salon and Spa, complete with refreshments and complimentary shuttle to and from the resort.
