The Kansas Dental Association’s 2014 Dentist of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Lucynda Raben, of Wichita, at the KDA Annual Session on Saturday, April 12. Raben accepted her award to the sound of cheers and applause, and surrounded by family members, friends, and colleagues.
She was nominated for the award by the 2013 KDA President, Dr. Jason Wagle.
“It is such an honor to receive the Dentist of the Year award from the Kansas Dental Association,” said Dr. Raben. “I am truly humbled.”
Dr. Wagle spoke on why Dr. Raben is the well deserving recipient of this year’s Dentist of the Year award:
“Lucynda is a passionate, tireless worker for the dentists of Kansas and organized dentistry in general. She is committed to improving dental health for the citizens of Kansas with a strong effort to educate them in preventive dental practices through her leadership role in support of fluoridation, at both the local and state level. She has been an active representative of dentistry in her many roles on the board of directors of Delta Dental of Kansas and the Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation, where she is currently Board Chair for both organizations. She is unselfish with her spare time and is well read on issues affecting dentistry in Kansas. We can all trust Lucynda to continue to work on our behalf to protect our profession and improve the oral health of all Kansans. Lucynda’s service is the definition of the KDA Dentist of the Year.”
Several of Dr. Raben’s colleagues from Delta Dental were also in attendance to see her receive the award.
Recently, Dr. Raben testified to the Kansas Legislature House Committee of Health and Human Services in favor of community water fluoridation. She also served as a leader in Wichita in last year’s attempt to keep optimized levels of fluoride in the water.
Dr. Raben has been a delegate of the Wichita District Dental Society, and served on several councils and committees for the Kansas Dental Association through out her 30 years of membership. She is also an active member the Dental Assisting program of the Wichita Area Technical College, serving on the Advisory Board. Those who know Dr. Raben say that if there is a program involving dentistry or oral health in Kansas, she has probably been involved in that program.
Dr. Raben graduated from the University of Kansas and went on to the University of Iowa to attend dental school. From Iowa City, she moved to New York City, where she had been chosen for an externship and a GPR residency spending time at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Bird S. Coler Hospital, and Metropolitan Hospital. In addition, she completed a certificate program with the New York Institute of Clinical Oral Pathology.
From New York, Dr. Raben moved back to Kansas to practice dentistry with her father, Cy. They split their time between two offices, one in Russell and one in Wichita, and she eventually purchased the Wichita office as her own.
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Raben loves to travel and spend time with her family members, friends, and dogs. She is the third of eight children, and has fourteen nieces and nephews. She is an avid lover of music and reading, as well as gardening and cooking. Her “Chocolate Rum Bundt cake with Chili Raspberry Sauce” won 2nd place in the most recent Wichita Eagle Holiday Cook Book contest. She has also completed seven marathons.
The Kansas Dental Association thanks Dr. Lucynda Raben for her dedication to the profession of dentistry.
