Dr. Donald Howard Essington, 84, a longtime dentist from Council Grove, KS, passed away Monday July 8th. He retired from dentistry in 2004.
Essington was recently featured in the KDA’s 140 Years, 140 Stories, Celebrating 140 Years of the Kansas Dental Association and held #52 in the book.
Don and Connie purchased the Stagecoach Motor-tel on North Neosho Street in Council Grove in 1982, completely renovating it and restoring it to its original Victorian splendor, establishing the Cottage House as one of the premier tourist destinations in the Flint Hills. Don, along with son-in-law Dr. Dan Frese, sometimes adopted the role of bellhop when large tour buses checked in, while Connie attended to the rest of the business.
Jennifer Jones who photographed Dr. Essington recounted how important the community of Council Grove was to him and his family.
“I enjoyed the chance to meet Dr. Essington and his family,” Jones said. “We are saddened to hear of his passing. The community of Council Grove was well served by his commitment to their community of the years.”
