In 1996, the Kansas Dental Association partnered with Dental Lifeline Network – Kansas to develop a Donated Dental Services (DDS) program to help Kansas residents with disabilities or who are elderly or medically fragile and have no other access to dental care. The Kansas DDS program is similar to 40 other state programs that will collectively generate $24.7 million in donated services by June 2014. Since inception, volunteer dentists and labs have donated over $8.5 million of comprehensive treatment for 2,905 vulnerable people in Kansas!

The DDS program restores the oral health and transforms the lives of the patients they serve, like 59-year-old Mrs. F. from Wichita. She was diagnosed with epilepsy in 1982 and multiple sclerosis in 1993. In 1994, she suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of an automobile accident and had her jaw wired. Mrs. F. had not been to a dentist since before the accident, and her oral health desperately needed attention. The same DDS volunteer dentist who had donated care to her husband graciously offered to address Mrs. F.’s dental needs as well. The dentist performed four deep cleanings, restored one tooth, and donated two crowns; two volunteer labs fabricated the crowns at no charge. Thanks to this generous team of DDS volunteers, Mrs. F. received $4,261 in free care!

She expressed her sincere appreciation:

Thank you for all the wonderful work you have done on my mouth.
You gave me a beautiful gift I get to receive every day.”

Currently 369 Kansas dentists are DDS volunteers, but the Dental Lifeline Network is still requesting and recruiting volunteers.  Vulnerable people are still waiting for care .
